We have chosen 12 topics from Scottish History which we felt asked relevant questions, or provided relevant examples for the present day. They were also all topics which we felt were generally under studied, or were studied in ways which obscured important parts of the stories.
Our aim is to create learning spaces which reconnect past and present, which foster community, which encourage critical thinking and which enable us to develop collective analysis of how we got here, and what we need to do next. Often political education and historical education is about absorbing facts or memorising dates, a form of learning which is very focussed in the head, and leaves out our emotional experiences . It is a hope that through these learning spaces, we can collectively develop ways of learning which enable us to feel the impacts of what has happened, and change how we see things in an embodied way. We believe that this is necessary in order to change ourselves and our society.
The resources in the following pages are our best attempt to pull together what already exists in Scotland on these topics and create new resources where there are gaps. In picking topics which have been obscured or under-studied we knew there would be gaps in the information, we also knew that where there were resources they may not be accessible to many peoples learning styles, and may not present information in a way which invites critical conversation. In all honesty, there are more gaps than we anticipated but it feels honest to present things as we find them, and it is part of the work of this project to do more research, make more accessible learning resources and tell more of the important hidden stories.
If you have any additional suggestions of resources, please email them over to us and we will update them as we go!
