We are seeking people across Scotland (and the world!!!), to facilitate the Scottish Histories of Resistance learning groups in their local communities. This could simply be learning in your living room with your pals, or running this project in existing community hubs. Ideally this project would be an additional activity for existing community, friendship or organizing groups or happen alongside (and in support of) established projects. We want to build on what already exists and collaborate, rather than start anew, wherever it's possible.
The role of facilitator(s) is crucial to making this project happen! We have deliberately designed a learning program which focuses on the local, national and international but the strength will come from strongly rooted local work. You know how your community works, what gets folk to events, what people are interested in, who has the old stories and how to bring conversations to the table. This knowledge is invaluable and something that nobody outside your place could replicate.
We feel that the role of facilitator is best done by 2 or 3 people, to ensure that someone can always be present at each of the events throughout the year and that the tasks of organizing and holding aren't too much for one person. It's also important to note that the facilitator doesn't have to be responsible for doing anything, they are responsible for making sure everything gets done by someone!
If you’d be keen to run an online discussion group for people who are less able to leave their homes, or are the only learner in their local area then please let us know! Also if it feels too much to imagine doing things monthly for a year, then fair enough! We want people to participate however they feel able so if you would like to run a one off event or use these materials in another way entirely then we are open to all ideas.
In general we are available for phone calls, zoom chats or in person meet ups when we are near you (on research missions), we understand that for lots of people running this kind of learning space is new and we want to share our skills, experience and support when possible!
Currently most research into history or social sciences happens within Universities, which often means the information generated stays within universities. We would love to hear from any academics who would like to share their research in dynamic community orientated ways, and anyone (academic or otherwise) who would like to be part of researching and creating content to be used outside of academic institutions.
There are many amazing stories out there just waiting to be told, so if you fancy taking on a specific project, looking in archives, collecting oral histories, writing or making short films then please get in touch. We have a lot of skills in our team and can also connect folks up with other people who are happy to share their knowledge, so you do not have to be someone who already knows how to do these things, just a willing and dedicated participant!
Moving forward we would like to create more organizing structure and leadership in our project, we are therefore inviting women, trans or non-binary people to join our steering group. This group will have overview on the project's content and structure, as well as taking responsibility for connecting the project to other organizing work happening in Scotland and internationally. It is important that this group represent the diversity of lived experiences in Scotland, so we will consider this when pulling the team together.
We would also welcome people who could give their skills in applying for funding (without compromising on the project's aims), creating digital content, and working with schools to create educational materials.
This group will meet once a month on zoom, with additional tasks being taken on by those with capacity at the time.
